You may not see them; often they work quietly in the background. You may think you don’t know any; they typically don’t want any accolades or recognition. But they are out there, and without them our communities wouldn't be the same.
Senior volunteers take on volunteer opportunities at schools, churches, hospitals, homeless shelters and more. Many seniors, like last year’s Salute to Senior Service US winner Clark Paradise, go on to start their own organizations that help their communities. They are an integral part of every town and organization.
The question as to why these amazing seniors volunteer is pretty simple. They want to make a difference in their communities; they want to give back. Many of them will tell you they get so much out of their volunteer work than they give.
Research by the Home instead Senior Care Network showed that senior volunteers gain a sense of purpose, stay active and feel better physically, emotionally and spiritually. The volunteers also use their volunteer work as a way to stay socially engaged, a challenge for many aging adults.
There are so many amazing stories of senior volunteers. Take a moment to read them and become inspired to give back to your own community. Nominate a senior volunteer who makes a difference in your community.
These volunteers are shining examples of generosity. They prove that age is no barrier when it comes to helping others. And while they may shy away from the spotlight, it’s important their stories are shared and celebrated!
