Great books for caregivers

Question: There is a book out about caregivers. The title is something like “The 48 Hour Day.” Do you know the correct title or the author? Thank You!

Dr. Amy: There are many excellent books on caregiving. I believe you may be looking for, “The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for Persons With Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementing Illnesses, and Memory Loss in Later Life” by Nancy L. Mace and Peter V. Rabins.

I am also a huge fan of, “The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care” by Virginia Bell and David Troxel. You can order these and other books from Amazon.com.

I'd love to hear from readers. What books have helped you to navigate your caregiving journey?

Another book that I would highly recommend is Alzheimer's: A Mother Daughter Journey, a photojournalistic memoir. The author/caregiver chronicles a 2-year period of caregiving during the middle to later stages of Alzheimer's disease. She demonstrates how she used a series of compassionate mission statements to help make the right decisions for her mother.
